What is the best way to hook up a HDTV, DVD Recorder and a Cable Box? - best upconverting receiver

This is what I have to work with:

1. HDTV with HDMI input
2. Cable box (DVR) with built in HDMI
3. Upscaling Player / Recorder - with HDMI

Each room has additional standard inputs and outputs.

I am sure I the best HD picture quality with the ability to DVR from my record to my DVD recorder.

What would be the best way to hook them up without having to invest in more equipment? I am willing to buy the necessary cables, but not an AV receiver or "other" type of gadget.
